1 Kings 13:1-6
Discuss
What did the man of God tell Jeroboam about the altars he had made?
The man of God (an unnamed prophet) speaks a warning from the Lord about his sin. He says a man out of the house of David, Josiah, will one day come and judge the priests who make sacrifices to false gods. We will see that this prophecy eventually comes true three centuries later in 2 Kings 23:15-20.
What kind of sign does God give Jeroboam to confirm the words spoken by the prophet?
The altar was torn down and ashes poured out from it, just as the prophet of the Lord had spoken.
What happens to Jeroboam when he tries to stop this?
Jeroboam stretched out his hand and tried to have the prophet stopped. His hand dried up so he could not return it to himself.
How can we see God’s grace in this story?
Jeroboam asked the prophet to pray for his hand to be restored. He does pray and God restores his hand. Jeroboam was a sinful man who had turned away from God and led the people to turn away from God, yet God showed grace to him even in his sin.
Pray
Thank You, Lord, for providing a way through Jesus for us to come back to You when sin leads us away. Help us to turn from sin and live in a way that is pleasing to You. We love You, Lord. Amen.
