Discuss

Ask questions about what you read. Here are three simple questions that you can ask about any passages in the Bible. We will use these same questions for each day’s discussion time this week.

What does this passage teach us about God?
Help kids notice where God is in this passage, even when it doesn’t specifically say. For example, God performed a miracle to provide enough oil for the widow to pay off her debt. It also shows us how gracious God is to take care of this widow and her sons when no one else around them would.

What does this passage teach us about people?
Help kids notice the struggles the characters are having, what their attitude was like, or how they responded to what was going on. For example, the widow was in a desperate situation with her children because she did not have a husband (remind kids that in that time women were dependent on their husband or family to provide for them) and there was no money to pay her debts and barely enough to eat.

How should we respond?
This isn’t always clear from the text but is a good question to get kids to think about, even in narrative passages like this. Point out how the characters respond and ask if that lines up with how God wants us to respond. For example, the widow feared the Lord (trusted Him and knew that He was the One true God), which is also how we should live.

Pray

Spend time praying. Thank God for His faithfulness to provide for the widow in the story and His faithfulness to provide for us as well.
